Author Interview – Jamie Davis
Last year, I was lucky enough to have a short story selected for an urban fantasy anthology and I connected with one of my co-authors for his podcast to chat about magic roundabouts (you can find the show here). Now his Extreme Medical Services book is on sale ($0.99 or free in Kindle Unlimited – seriously this is a bargain people!) and I was delighted to catch up with him again.
So Jamie, tell us a bit about yourself.
I consider myself something of a wandering soul. I’ve done many things over the course of my life, from TV audio engineer, to mr. Mom, to paramedic, to nurse. I even worked for a national rental car chain for a while. But the one thing that’s stayed constant for me was my desire to tell stories. I’d take any ordinary life event and turn it into an epic tale of adventure. At least that’s the way I saw it. My wife would tell you I freely embellish stories that change and “get better” all the time. This eventually led me to combine that storytelling drive with my love for fantasy and sci-fi books. Now I write books full time, realizing the culmination of a lifetime of telling tales.
Wow it sounds like you’ve done a lot! What’s your inspiration for the Extreme Medical Services series in particular?
Extreme Medical Services (book 1 of the series by the same name) sprung from my late night runs aboard a local ambulance as a paramedic. I often wondered about the people I encountered. Some of them seemed to lead adventurous lives. These random thoughts became the backbone of the series about paramedics who treat and transport supernatural creatures of all kinds when they have medical or traumatic emergencies. The series is now nine books long with a prequel novella thrown in for good measure.
That’s such a creative take on urban fantasy. Tell me more about the magic in the story.
The magic in the story comes from all sorts of places and cultures. I tried to look around and see all the various backgrounds of the people in my community and then looked for interesting creatures from their cultures to appear in my stories. The magic springs from the mythology of the world from which the creatures come. It makes it a lot of fun for me and my characters as they try to uncover the medical secret behind the patient’s current problem. Along the way, they encounter dangers and even stop the end of the world. It’s great fun.
It sounds like you really enjoy writing, are there any authors who’ve really inspired you?
Growing up, I loved books by people like Susan Cooper, Alan Dean Foster, Andre Norton, and Terry Brooks. Later I found authors like Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, David Weber, and Jim Butcher. All of these represent my deep love for all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi stories.
