Author Interview – Wayne Turmel

A couple of months ago, I was lucky enough to be part of a clubhouse group with Jamie Davis and he introduced me to Wayne Turmel. At the time Wayne was venturing into the murky world of urban fantasy fiction. Now his first book in the genre is published, I caught up with him for a chat. So Wayne, over to you. Tell us about yourself…

I’m a writer and speaker who lives in Las Vegas. I was a standup comedian for almost 20 years, which brought me from Canada to the US where I met The Duchess, 30 years later, here I am. I’ve written 14 books, most of which are business-oriented but about 7 years ago I began writing fiction to save what was left of my sanity. My first three novels are historical fiction, but the last, Johnny Lycan and the Anubis Disk (and the sequel if I can ever finish it) is urban fantasy.

I loved reading your first book about Johnny Lupul, it’s a fun read – how would you sum up your book for anyone who hasn’t read it?

Imagine a working-class guy, a  new private investigator, who just happens to be a werewolf. That’s Johnny Lupul. He thinks he’s the strangest thing out there–who wouldn’t– until he takes on a strange new case. The world is way weirder than he ever thought.

There are so many great urban fantasy creatures, why a werewolf?

I have always loved werewolves, they are the UF and horror creatures I most relate to–after all, who doesn’t think they have something dark and evil lurking behind their nice-guy exterior? Or shouldn’t I have said that out loud? Anyway, the idea of trying to solve crimes by using Lycan powers made me laugh… and besides being exciting, there is plenty of humor (or humour depending on where you live) in the book.

And when you’re not writing, who do you read?

I am bibliographically promiscuous (it’s a better term than book slut) meaning I read everything. In the UF field, it’s Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files as well as indie authors like  John P Logsdon and Shayne Silver. Of course, the original adventure story writer was Dumas, and the 3 Musketeers will always be my favorite book.
